As part of my NHIA Master's of Fine Arts program, I get one on one time with an artist mentor who can help guide my practice - how exciting! Today, I met my mentor, Amber Davis Tourlentes. In addition to being a working artist, Amber is also faculty at Emerson College. We had a wonderful conversation today about the many, many things. She used this interesting language to describe some of the underlying themes in my work, such as "the family unit and late capitalism." Amber has pointed me toward the gender theorist Judith Butler, social photographer Catherine Opie and author Susan Sontag.
I look forward to digging into these resources and practicing what she described "creating a portrait in other forms."
