More on sugar

It's been a big week for sugar here in Groton Hollow. We hit just shy of 50 degrees on Sat. and when I looked out the window I was overjoyed to see my honeybees flying. I rushed outside with my camera. They were feisty enough to be bumping into me when I got too close. So I went back in and suited up. I opened up the cover of each hive and was thrilled to see one hive thriving...and saddened to find the other hive completely dead. This is only my second winter with honeybees, but it is the first hive I've lost and I didn't expect it to be as upsetting as it is. Sunday the temps dropped back down, but we tapped some maple trees anyway. The temps have since stayed very low and we continue to wait for the sap to start flowing.
